Federal Labor has released its policy for young
workers. The policy titled “Forward with Fairness for
Australia’s Young Workers” draws upon Labor’s
workplace law plan “Forward with Fairness” and
provides three additional policies specifically for young
workers. The key elements of the policy are
summarized below.
Fair Work Australia will have a Young Worker Liaison Officer in each State. The Officer will monitor the terms and conditions of young workers under workplace law. The Officer will monitor complaints raised by young workers. Information provided by Fair Work Australia to young workers will be relevant and in terms, which young persons can understand.
The Young Workers’ Toolkit will include information for
young workers regarding employment issues and
Labor’s new industrial relations system. The kit will deal
with questions regarding bargaining, dismissal,
harassment, meal breaks and the different types of
work. The kit will be distributed through organisations
such as TAFE, Centrelink and Fair Work Australia. An
electronic copy will also be available on Fair Work
Australia’s website.
Labor has given a commitment to co-operate with the
States and Territories and other stakeholders to
develop a voluntary National Code of Practice for
Young Workers. Labor has not identified these ‘other
stakeholders. The National Code will cover issues such
as workplace safety and rostering arrangements for
young workers during school hours. The National Code
will also deal with workplace training and mentoring for
young workers.
