EXPERIENCE

Kate is a specialist employment and industrial relations lawyer skilled in providing targeted, timely and relevant advice to clients managing workforces from small to large. She is also experienced in work health and safety matters including investigations and prosecutions.

Where conflict cannot be resolved at the workplace level, Kate is experienced in representing employers in relation to unfair dismissal claims, general protections claims and notifications of dispute in the relevant tribunal.

Kate’s attention to detail and critical approach to document review provides employers with insight into areas of risk posed by contracts of employment and other industrial instruments, coupled with proactive and pragmatic remedial suggestions. Her advisory experience extends to preparation of employment contracts (both Award and Non-Award), facilitation and oversight of workplace investigations and management of executive recruitment and terminations.

Prior to joining private practice she worked as an Industrial Advocate for the Australian Workers’ Union (Newcastle, Central Coast & Northern Regions Branch). Her experience in enterprise bargaining includes reviewing enterprise agreements and providing advice on drafting, bargaining, the formal steps for approval of an agreement and appearing at the Fair Work Commission in relation to disputes over the approval of agreements. Having done this work from both an employer and employee perspective gives her a unique understanding of issues which are likely to be problematic, those likely to cause industrial turmoil and how to get bargaining back on track.

Based in the firm’s Newcastle office, Kate’s clients have included government entities, listed companies and small to medium enterprises. They represent a broad range of industry sectors including mining and resources, education, manufacturing and civil construction. She is a regular author and presenter on a range of employment and work health and safety related topics.

In 2018, Kate was a member of the winning project team as part of the HunterNet Future Leaders Program. She is a member of the HunterNet Future Leaders Program committee and the Newcastle Law Society management committee, as well as an involved member of the Industrial Relations Society of NSW (Newcastle Branch).  

She is also proud to support the Hunter Community Legal Centre, the University of Newcastle Legal Centre and helps to foster the next generation of young legal talent by supervising placement students from the University.
